NEW INDIGENOUS FABRIC RANGE

Sebel Karlu fabric range

Sebel would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of country throughout Australia. We pay our respect to Elders past and present.

We’ve partnered with contemporary visual artist Helena Geiger to bring you the Sebel Karlu fabric range. This exclusive range is the first step in an ongoing journey of building Indigenous connections with Sebel.

Karlu translates to “round boulders”

Karlu translates to “round boulders”

The Karlu design brings together the shapes of the stunning rock formations and huge, piled granite boulders found in the beautiful sacred reserve known as Karlu Karlu in the Australian Northern Territory. It is an area of great cultural significance with many Indigenous stories.

“Collaborating with Sebel on the Karlu range was an exciting project for me. To get started, I was given colour chips that reflected Sebel’s current colour options, I then selected some colours that would work well with my Karlu designs. We worked together to tweak them a little before agreeing on the final colours. I really enjoyed working with Sebel and can’t wait to see their furniture products with my fabric designs.”

About the Artist

About the Artist

Helena Geiger is a contemporary visual artist with an Indigenous heritage of Gumbayngirr, from Northern NSW. Helena’s work is heavily inspired by nature's detail. She has spent extensive time living and travelling through the Northern Territory, and her memories of waterfalls, desert landscapes, rich red dirt, coloured ochres and weathered rocks form the foundations of much of her art. Her textile work features batik hand-dyed and printed patterns and has been used in both fashion and commercial furnishing applications. Helena describes herself as an Indigenous artist producing landscape inspired work that is contemporary and relevant to current times. Her work has been exhibited extensively in Australia and is included in collections both within Australia and abroad.

“Karlu is a unique design inspired by the ancient landscape of the Karlu Karlu reserve in the Australian Northern Territory. It combines the breathtaking shapes of rock formations and massive granite boulders piled on top of each other and scattered across this sacred area.”
