Case Study: Foxwell State Secondary College

When Foxwell State Secondary College opened its brand-new facility, the leadership team and architects had a clear vision: warm, supportive learning environments that were as functional as they were inviting. Sebel worked closely with the Foxwell team and their architects across two stages to turn that vision into reality — furnishing a Learning Hub, general learning areas, study spaces and staff facilities.

The Project

School Foxwell State Secondary College
Project Type New school fitout
Scope Learning Hub, general learning areas, individual study spaces, administration and staff areas
Delivered Stage 1 & 2, 2021–2022

The Brief

Foxwell wanted innovative but functional spaces and was open to ideas on design and layout. Style, quality of finishes and the range of textures and fabrics available were all important — the school wanted environments that looked great and worked hard at the same time.

The brief spanned the full breadth of the college: a large Learning Hub for socialising and collaborative study, general learning areas flexible enough to support different teaching modes, individual study spaces for focused work, and a staff room that gave teachers a genuine place to recharge away from their desks.

The Approach

Sebel worked with the Foxwell team throughout the design process, ensuring every product choice balanced aesthetics with real functionality. The Learning Hub was designed around the Smart Softie modular seating system — a large curved configuration in orange, blue and grey that anchors the space and can be used in different ways throughout the day. Integrated Smart bookcase benches line the perimeter, creating natural resource zones, while a high bench with bar stools and small round tables provide additional study options across the hub.

General learning areas were fitted with flexible table configurations — including trapezoid and round tables — paired with Postura® Max Chairs and Smart Softie modular soft seating in green and grey for breakout zones within each classroom. The mix of seating types and heights gives teachers the flexibility to shift between teaching modes without disrupting the class.

Individual study spaces were fitted with acoustic-screened study benches, round group tables and Postura® Max Chairs — supporting both focused independent work and small group collaboration in the same room.

For the staff area, a magenta banquette with flip-top tables was separated from workstations, creating a genuine break-out space where staff can relax and recharge away from their desks.

The Result

The completed fitout delivered warm, engaging environments across every area of the college. The Learning Hub in particular became one of the most-used spaces in the school — chosen by students before school and at lunch as well as during lessons.

The Learning Hub has become a popular place with students before school and at lunch times. Students are choosing to be in the space.
