Case Study: Lee Street State Special School

When Lee Street State Special School opened in Caboolture in 2020, it did so with an ambitious brief: create rich, inviting learning environments that catered to the diverse needs of every student. Sebel was brought in to help design and furnish the brand-new facility from the ground up.

The Project

School Lee Street State Special School
Location Caboolture, Moreton Bay QLD
Project Type New school fitout
Scope Classrooms, Library, STEM, hospitality, sensory spaces, hall, music therapy room,
Completed 2020

The Brief

The school’s vision was clear: spaces that students and staff loved to be in — comfortable, inviting and purposefully designed to foster curiosity and a love of learning. For a multi-use facility catering to students with diverse needs, flexibility and sensory consideration were central to every furniture decision.

Colour played a deliberate role in the brief. Calm, natural tones were chosen to make spaces feel comfortable and homely rather than institutional — an important consideration for the school’s student community.

The Approach

Sebel worked closely with the school to translate its vision into a cohesive furniture solution across a wide range of learning environments. Soft furnishings were used to create breakout zones for collaboration and quiet learning, while mobile storage and flexible table configurations ensured larger spaces could be adapted as needed.

The forest green flooring throughout the building informed the colour palette, with neutral furniture tones selected to complement rather than compete with the interior.

For the staff training room, tablet arm chairs provided a practical solution for professional development sessions without sacrificing comfort.

The Result

The completed fitout delivered rich, functional learning environments across every area of the school — from specialist classrooms to sensory spaces and performing arts facilities. The variety of furniture across different zones gives students options and supports a range of learning styles, while the considered use of colour and soft furnishings creates spaces that feel welcoming and calm.
