The Original and the Best

Loved by over 11,000 schools and more than 5 million students worldwide, the Postura® Max is one of the best-selling classroom chairs in the world. But popularity alone doesn’t explain its staying power. Behind the chair’s distinctive shape is decades of research, rigorous testing and a genuine commitment to getting classroom ergonomics right.

Here’s what makes it different.

Engineered for Posture, Not Just Appearance

The chair’s IPR (Ischial-Pressure Release) system distributes pressure across a larger surface area, encouraging students to sit correctly rather than slumping.

An extra-large lumbar air ventilation opening provides lower back support while keeping airflow moving, and a flex bridge beneath the seat absorbs movement rather than rigidly resisting it. An anti-rocking footing system prevents backwards tipping — a common distraction and structural stress point in lesser chairs.

Built to Last — and Tested to Prove It

The Postura® Max carries a 20-year warranty, backed by Sebel’s own NATA-certified testing facility. Every component is stress-tested against domestic and international standards before going to market. The single-injection moulded polypropylene shell — formed as one continuous piece — eliminates the joints where cheaper chairs typically fail, and anti-static polypropylene keeps it cleaner for longer with minimal maintenance.

The Original Monobloc

Sebel introduced the first-ever monobloc plastic moulded chair and has remained a leader in plastics manufacturing for 75 years. Produced at our Minto, Sydney factory, the Postura® Max is designed, tested and made in Australia — with no joints to loosen, no components to separate and no weak points introduced by assembly.

Imitations exist, but pressure mapping shows they concentrate load at the sit bones rather than distributing it across the seat. Look for the official Sebel and Postura® branding stamped on the back of the chair.

Why Imitations Fall Short

The Postura® Max has been widely copied — which Sebel takes as a measure of its success. But the differences between the original and its imitators are more than cosmetic.

Knock-offs are typically made with cheaper, more brittle plastics and without the pressure testing and ergonomic research that define the genuine article. Pressure mapping comparisons show clearly that imitation chairs concentrate load at the ischial tuberosity — the sit bones — rather than distributing it across the seat. Over the course of a school day, that difference is felt.
